Today, the importance of the role that animals play in child development has become a common topic. Various examples (and case studies) suggest that animals can help a child take the first steps towards basic interaction with living creatures. However, the precise behavioral mechanisms are generally not yet well understood. Therefore at this symposium, there will be two case studies, one from America, one from Japan, both reporting on child communication. The symposium will especially focus on the role of dogs in order to deepen our understanding of the relationship between emotional development in the human child, and animals.
