Prof. Akio FUKUSHO |
Prof. Akio FUKUSHO
He is Director of the School of Veterinary Nursing and Technology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, at Nippon Veterinary and Life Science University, specializing in animal viruses and animal infectious diseases. In the veterinary field, nurses have important roles separate from those of veterinarians. Therefore veterinary nurses need to improve their skill sets and knowhow to high levels of knowledge and technique. For this reason the job of the veterinary nurse (veterinary medical technician) should be recognized and turned into a national qualification. |

Dr. Jill CLINE, PhD, |
Dr. Jill CLINE, PhD,
(Research Scientist, Nestle Purina Product Technology Center)
Dr. Cline is a research nutritionist on the Technical Communications team. She is responsible for developing and implementing global communication programs that assist in the understanding of pet nutrition science and technology among veterinarians, consumer and breeder communities. Dr. Cline also has an interest in external collaborations relating to the human animal bond and nutrition.
Dr. Cline received her PhD in Nutrition Science from The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1996. During her tenure at U of I, she conducted research on vitamin metabolism in dogs and pigs. While at University of Illinois, Dr. Cline received the JBT scholarship for research excellence. The results of her research were used to redefine the vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and vitamin A requirements of dogs. References to her studies can be found in the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) handbook which provides the guidelines for nutrient content of pet foods and in the National Research Center Reference book for Dogs.
After finishing her dissertation, Dr. Cline worked for several years in product development and technical support services. In 1999, Dr. Cline accepted a position in Applied Research with Nestle Purina. Her work in Applied Nutrition focused on the influence of nutrition on skin and coat health and dermatological syndromes. Dr. Cline and her colleagues were the first to define the volatiles excreted in the skin of puppies which give them that unique “puppy smell” that everyone associates with dogs under 16 weeks of age. Dr. Cline’s special areas of interest include skin and coat health and nutrition, exercise physiology and nutrition and the interaction of nutrition, behavior and the human animal bond. She has recently developed an interest in immune health in particular, the effect of gut health on immune status.
Dr. Cline has lectured on six out of the seven continents and is eagerly awaiting a veterinary nutrition or behavioral seminar in Antarctica. The topics of her lectures have ranged from how to build a kennel to how to manage diabetes in cats and everything nutrition and husbandry related in between. Much of her practical experience comes from volunteering with various foster and shelter organizations over the years and managing her own menagerie of dogs, cats and horses.
Dr. Cline has a keen interest in nature and engages in many outdoor activities with her five dogs and husband including hiking, canoeing and birdwatching (usually without the dogs!). In addition, Dr. Cline is neophyte hunter jumper equestrian and is learning much from her horse about riding. Dr. Cline and her husband have developed their 20 acre home as a wildlife sanctuary, complete with pond for swimming dogs, fishing herons and migrating ducks in rural Arkansas USA. |

Dr. Mihoko NAKAGAWA |
Dr. Mihoko NAKAGAWA
http://www.vets.ne.jp/~school/pets/
As well as treating animals, the job of the veterinarian covers public health and animal health, nutritional safety for people and environment hygiene. Practices that are started for small animals are, especially, about the human-animal bonding point of view, and they offer owners peace of mind by providing treatment. This is the job of veterinarians.’ From this point of view, Nakagawa has, ever since the mid-1970s, believed it to be necessary to provide veterinarian knowledge and skills for animal-keeping in schools. So, while gathering case studies about animal intervention education and introducing them extensively, Nakagawa has been trying to establish animal keeping (zoogony) support systems by veterinarian associations and local governments. For this, she has been giving lectures to teachers, veterinarians and students of colleges of education.
