Dr. NAKAJIMA Kensuke D.V.M., M.S. |
Deputy Director Dr. Nakajima joined the Ministry of Health and Welfare (formerly the Ministry of Health and Welfare) in 1986 as a veterinary expert where he was involved in measures to combat imported disease and in the supervision of food product imports. Following this term Dr. Nakajima was posted to the Food Safety Program of the WHO. Then, when Japan's Central Government underwent restructuring, responsibilities for zoonosis control were unified under the Tuberculosis and Infectious Diseases Control Division. Here, Dr. Nakajima took charge of Veterinary Health and has since mostly worked to counter zoonosis through the organizing of information dissemination, contingency planning, and surveillance system enforcement. Dr. Nakajima was born in Tokyo and, although he currently keeps no animals, has kept 3 dogs and 1 cat in the past. Recommended Internet

Prof. UEMURA Takashi | Born 1940 in Kita-Kawachi Ward, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, Professor Uemura graduated from Osaka Prefecture University Veterinary School. He began a post-graduate course there before becoming an assistant, a lecturer, an associate professor and then a professor of veterinary public health. Professor Uemura also worked in California, USA and Norway for approximately two years. He is now based in Osaka, where he specializes in research on food protection, and control of zoonosis. Furthermore, over the past decade, he has brought ideas for creating a 'Healthy Society' of man / animal co-existence into the public domain by promoting the significance of service dogs and animals in schools. |

Prof. FUJITA Koichiro M.D.,D.M.S. | Born
in Manchuria (China) in 1939. After graduating from the School of Medicine,
Tokyo Medical and Dental University, he completed a post-graduate course
in medicine at Tokyo University, becoming a Doctor of Medicine. Following
professorial posts at Kanazawa and Nagasaki Universities, he is now a
professor at Tokyo Medical and Dental University where he specializes
in Parasitology, Tropical Medicine and Infection Immunology. His areas
of research include malaria, filaria, adult T-cell leukemia and HIV related
immunity, and he also investigates treatments for infectious diseases
common to man and animal stock. He has written several books, serious
subjects handled with humor, looking at modern human society in the context
of natural ecosystems. These have won many readers through their amusing
yet insightful criticism and warnings. His books include 'Warau Kaichu' (Laughing Mawworms), 'Soratobu Kiseichu' (Flying Parasites), 'Kyosei no Imi Ron' (The Meaning of Co-Living), 'Shishi-Shinchu no Sanadamushi' (Tapeworm within the Dragon), 'Seiketsu wa Byoki da' (Cleanliness is a Sickness), 'Nihonjin no Seiketsu ga Abunai' (Japanese Cleanliness is Dangerous), etc. |

Dr. Frank R. ASCIONE , Ph.D. |
Biographical Information Dr. Ascione received his bachelors degree in psychology from Georgetown University in 1969 and his doctoral degree in developmental psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973. He is now a professor in the Department of Psychology and adjunct professor in Family and Human Development at Utah State University. Dr. Ascione has published a number of articles on the development of antisocial and prosocial behavior in children, coedited two books Cruelty to Animals and Interpersonal Violence: Readings in Research and Application (1998), Child Abuse, Domestic Violence, and Animal Abuse: Linking the Circles of Compassion for Prevention and Intervention (1998), and authored Safe Havens for Pets: Guidelines for Programs Sheltering Pets for Women who are Battered. In the fall of 2001, the U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention published Ascione's review of animal abuse and youth violence as a Research Bulletin. Dr. Ascione was selected to receive the 2001 Distinguished Scholar Award from the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations and the International Society for Anthrozoology. Dr. Ascione has conducted research related to humane education and children's attitudes toward animals. More recently, he has focused his attention on child and adolescent animal abuse. This research examines the common roots of violence toward people and animals and is directed at identifying an early indicator of at-risk status in children. Dr. Ascione is a regular invited speaker at local, national, and international conferences (including recent conferences in Tel Aviv, Geneva, Dublin, Prague, Florence, Rome, Brussels, Gothenburg, Cambridge, Toronto, Vancouver (BC), London (Ontario), Rio de Janeiro, and Amsterdam).
Dr. Ascione has provided information or testimony for the state legislatures of Utah, Ohio, Colorado, and Washington, regarding cruelty to animals legislation. A member of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Research on Child Development, Dr. Ascione serves on the Scientific Advisory Council of the Humane Society of the United States and the Child and Animal Abuse Prevention Advisory Council of the Latham Foundation. He is past president of the Southwestern Society for Research in Human Development and is a member of the cadre of experts for The American Psychological Association's Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family.
