On Sunday 11th November 2007, the eLive Love Animals Festival - Enjoy Sports with Dogsf was held on the Lawn Area of Port Island in Kobe. This date coincided with edogsf dayf, as November 11th when spoken as g11/11h mimics the sound of a dog barking (in Japanese language). The Festival was blessed with fine weather and with the usual invigorating sea breeze. Overall, it was the perfect day for marking the Festivalfs final use of this venue.

[Opening]
The 7th Live Love Animals Festival 2007, eEnjoy Sports with Dogsf began with a speech by Ms. Kayoko Tominaga, Representative of NPO Knots. gThe scale of our Festival has grown since the very first eventh she said gand we are happy to have been able to provide such an opportunity for friendship and communication.h She announced that this would be the last time to hold the event at the present venue. Then Mr. Yada, Chairman of Kobe City Animal Protection Association, gave some words of welcome: gThank you everyone for coming today. This Festival is held because we believe it is a great way to highlight the importance of the spirit of animal protection. We feel very happy to have been able to hold the Festival again this year.h

Mr. Hammer, President of Nestle Purina PetCare, the projectfs Special Sponsor was also present together with his two dogs, Gee Gee (an Irish Wolfhound) and Hanna (a Labrador Retriever). Irish Wolfhounds are a rare breed in Japan and, as a consequence, Gee Gee was soon surrounded by many people and became a particularly popular canine guest. Mr. Hammer gave a very friendly speech and invited all present to ehave fun!f

After the opening, participants were divided into each competition; those taking part in the Frisbee Section, the Agility Section and Canicross/Gig-Race Section. All were full of enthusiasm. After instructional sessions, the competitions began cheered on by families and friends. Most of the dog/owner teams competed in great earnest while some others just seemed to be there for the fun of it, jogging along at their own cheerful pace. Both styles were a delight to watch. |
|
[Frisbee Section]
(In cooperation with the Hyogo Branch of the Japan Frisbee Dog Association)
In the Frisbee Section, there was a eRetrieve Competitionf and eBeginners Competitionf. In the Retrieve Competition, the owner threw either a toy or a ball and the dog retrieved it. In the Beginners Competition, only Frisbees were used. Participants compete to see how many points they can score within a fixed time period. Some were very good during practice but not so accomplished during the actual competition. Conversely others did unusually well when it came to competing for real. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves immensely.

[Agility Section]
(In cooperation with OPDES)
This section was divided into eBeginnersf and eNovices 1f, and each of these had two classes; eMini Classf and eStandard Classf. There were hurdles and tunnels, with easy versions also prepared so that beginners could also try. Each year the number of dogs able to clear the obstacles seems to be increasing which suggests that maybe the number of people enjoying agility training has been increasing. The dogs that most elegantly cleared each obstacle under their ownerfs guidance won the loudest applause. |

[Canicross / Gig-Race Section]
(In cooperation with the Gig-Race Association)
In Canicross, the owners run with their dogs and, for this Festival, the course was 100 meters in length. In a Gig-race, owners ride a bicycle with their dog running alongside or behind. There were two classes for this section; the Gig Class (50 meters) and the Sub-Novice Class (100 meters). For both the canicross and gig-races, the fastest time was the winning factor. Before the actual races, the Festival provided a cautionary lecture and practice session to ensure the competition would be conducted safely for all involved. |

[K-9 Free Style]
(In cooperation with eDogs Lifef)
In this event dogs and their owners dance together to some music. This year, the scoring system had been changed. One person from each association was asked to serve as a judge and, altogether, 5 judges scored the competition. The scoring system was specific to the event but technical points were included. Overall, we believe the scoring system was easy for all to understand. Each dance ecouplef appeared with carefully thought-out themes and costumes and obviously delighted the audience which applauded excitedly. The winning duo was a Cocker spaniel team who danced to a wedding theme. It was a lovely performance set to a heart warming story.

[Exhibition Displays]
After the competition sessions eAgilityf, eK-9 Free-Stylef and eFrisbee Dogf displays were exhibited. In the agility demonstration, the display dog jumped over hurdles from the right or from the left, either alternatively or continuously from the right (or vice-versa), or showed how swiftly it could return to its owner. This performance elegantly demonstrated how attentive dogs need to be to their handlers and how important it is for handlers to give precise instructions. Agility is a highly profound activity.
In the K-9 Free-Style, two dog/human pairs appeared and the audience applauded the stunning dance performances they gave.
The Frisbee dog exhibition was provided by dogs from the Japan Frisbee Dog Association. They gave some astounding demonstrations and the audience cheered with delight. Particularly impressive was the very small Jack Russel Terrier that could effortlessly and cheerfully catch a Frisbee disc seemingly far too big for its body-size. |

[eJankenf (paper, scissors, stone) contest]
Thanks to the generosity of various retailers, as in previous years, many goods were donated as eJankenf contest prizes. Although by this time it was growing dark many people stayed on to try out their luck. For those who did not win in the other contests, this was a chance for them to go home a winner. By the time we reached the moment of the eAccommodation for 2 plus petf prize it was completely dark. Yet many people stayed till the end and said esee you next year!f Two lucky people won the framed dog picture taken by the professional photographer.

As mentioned, this was the last time for the Festival to be held on the Lawn Area of Port Island. During the event, many people asked us if the event was the last one or if it was going to be held next year. We told them eDonft worry!f The venue will change but we have already started to prepare another site so we can hold it again next year. The format may change slightly but we will do our best to present an event that is equally, or even more, enjoyable for everyone and their dogs. So see you next year, in another location! |

We would also like to thank all the shops and retailers who took part with booths.
