Dr. Elizabeth Ormerod

Elizabeth Ormerod BVMS MRCVS is currently Chair of SCAS, The Society for Companion Animal Studies. She is a veterinary surgeon, and qualified from the University of Glasgow in 1975. Since 1984 she and her husband, a veterinary pathologist, have run their own companion animal veterinary practice in Lancashire. She has a deep interest in the practical applications of the human animal bond. Her Community Outreach work includes teaching humane education in local schools; introduction of animal assisted therapy to hospitals, nursing homes, psychiatric facilities and prisons; support of pet owners moving to sheltered accommodation and nursing homes, including preparation of suitable pet keeping protocol. She is a founder member of Pathway, the UK pets in housing campaign coalition. Collaborated on new foundation degree on Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) at Myerscough College, Lancashire. She is co-founder of Canine Partners, the British assistance dog programme. And advisor on AAT to the Scottish Prison Service, and Pet Therapist to a maximum secure prison unit for several years.

As a Churchill Fellow she travelled extensively throughout the USA visiting centres of excellence in the study and practice of the human animal bond. She has studied the role of companion animals in institutions in UK and overseas.
