“SILENT REVOLUTION OF RABIES ELIMINATION FROM BANGLADESH!”

AIMS
Rabies, a neglected, fatal zoonotic disease, is widely distributed and continues to be a major public health issue in many developing countries like Bangladesh. Every year more than 70000 peoples die worldwide from rabies whereas in Bangladesh these numbers are more than 2000.

MATERIALS AND METHODS
Conduct national survey on rabies including dog population, scaling up of Mass Dog Vaccination (MDV) in whole over the country and promotion of registration and vaccination of pet dogs.

RESULTS
Most (88%) of the victims were from rural areas and majority were children (61%). 99% cases were transmitted by dogs. It is believed that there are more than 1.2 million dogs (in Bangladesh) of which 83% are stray. Achieving herd immunity through MDV is believed to be the preferred and cost effective method for rabies elimination. The country piloted MDV in Cox’s Bazaar Municipality (one of the famous tourist place) area in 2011. Then it scaled up MDV whole over the country. The country has to conduct three rounds of MDV in all the areas of its territory within 2016. Till today, we completed MDV in 58 Municipalities out of 64. A significant reduction (60%) of rabies cases has been observed in the country (According to the reported annual rabies cases from IDH).

CONCLUSION
Bangladesh is now at its knocking at the door stage for rabies elimination program. It has already navigated quite a distance within a very short period time, has to cover a long distance yet to achieve the goal. Rational support from different (both domestic and international) organizations/groups can lead the country towards a successful end within the postulated time.
