“Effect of ovarian hormones on immune activity of dendritic cells”

Pyometra is a crucial uterine infection in bitch which has high incidence in the first half of diestrus when blood concentration of progesterone is highest and estrogen is lowest. It also observed often after treatment with progesterone, used to block estrus. This suggests the immunity is affected by the ovarian hormones. Therefore effects on dendritic cells (DC) exposed to ovarian hormones were examined as a major cell type responsible for immunity. Results showed that progesterone significantly inhibited the maturation of DCs which results inhibitory effect on the immunity. In contrast, estrogen stimulated the maturation of DCs enhancing its immune stimulating ability. Therefore it suggests that preventive measures should be taken in order to prevent pyometra in diestrus and after progesterone treatment to strengthen the immune system.
